Notes 27 : The Variational Method 3 3 . Families of Trial Wave Functions

چکیده
Very few realistic problems in quantum mechanics are exactly solvable, so approximation methods are a virtual necessity for understanding the physics of real systems. In Notes 22 we considered bound state perturbation theory, which allows us to find the discrete energy eigenvalues and eigenstates of a system that is close to a solvable system. But what do we do when there is no exactly solvable system close to a given system, as often happens in practice? One answer is the variational method, which we discuss in these notes. The variational method is particularly useful for finding approximations to the ground state energy and eigenfunction of a system. It is harder to use for excited states, with some exceptions that we will mention in this set of notes. Nevertheless, the variational method is a vital one in the repertoire of techniques useful in quantum mechanics.

Studying confined quantum systems (CQS) is very important in nano technology. One of the basic CQS is a hydrogen atom confined in spherical cavity. In this article, eigenenergies and eigenfunctions of hydrogen atom in spherical cavity are calculated, using linear variational method. B-splines are used as basis functions, which can easily construct the trial wave functions with appropriate bound...
متن کاملExplicitly correlated trial wave functions in Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of excited states of Be and Be
We present a new form of explicitly correlated wave function whose parameters are mainly linear, to circumvent the problem of the optimization of a large number of non-linear parameters usually encountered with basis sets of explicitly correlated wave functions. With this trial wave function we succeeded in minimizing the energy instead of the variance of the local energy, as is more common in ...
متن کاملNumerical Solution of The Parabolic Equations by Variational Iteration Method and Radial Basis Functions
In this work, we consider the parabolic equation: $u_t-u_{xx}=0$. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the method of variational iteration method and radial basis functions for solving this equation. Also, the method is implemented to three numerical examples. The results reveal that the technique is very effective and simple.

Variational Monte Carlo calculations of the quasielectron and quasihole ex-citation energies in the fractional quantum Hall effect have been carried out at filling fractions ν = 1/3, 1/5, and 1/7. For the quasielectron both the trial wave function originally proposed by Laughlin and the composite fermion wave function proposed by Jain have been used. We find that for long-range Coulomb interact...
